The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as: “A partnership with clients in an inspiring, thought-provoking, and creative process to maximize personal and professional potential.”
Where Does It Differentiate?
- Coaching is not mentoring. It does not give advice or provide guidance, it does not transfer experience or knowledge, nor does it provide mentorship.
- It is not psychotherapy or healing work. It does not involve practices aimed at relieving psychological pain, healing emotional wounds, or providing healing.
- It is not a training program. It does not train individuals to acquire knowledge and skills within a specific curriculum.

What is a Chemistry Session?
In coaching, the chemistry session is a free introductory meeting between the professional coach and the individual considering coaching (the client). This meeting typically lasts no more than half an hour. During the session, the coach explains what coaching is and how it differentiates from other disciplines. Expectations are clarified, and information is provided on how the process will proceed. The client’s needs and potential topics can be discussed. If both parties agree after the session, a coaching agreement is made, and the coaching process begins.
What is a discovery session?
The discovery session takes place after the chemistry session. Additionally, it is the first meeting that starts the process. In the discovery session, the client sets their goal. Moreover, they discover their strengths and gain a deep awareness of their values.
