We have many roles in our daily lives that we are involved in and maintain. For example, we take on many roles such as an employee, manager, mother, child, spouse, lover, friend, aunt, uncle, or sibling all at the same time. Have you ever noticed how much you go back and forth between these roles? One moment, you might be an older sibling helping your brother or sister with their lessons or joking around, and suddenly, you are a child talking to your mother in a completely different way. I would like to appreciate you for seeking to bring order to your life in such a multi-role existence.
If you say, “I want to organize my life,” I want you to rethink this. In fact, you are a person who can easily navigate between multiple roles and successfully manage them. So how does life suddenly turn into chaos, and why do we often find ourselves trying to catch up with everything in the middle of chaos? Don’t panic! “Organizing Chaos: Tips for Organizing Your Life” series is here to help you. So, grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and let’s embark on a journey toward a more balanced and fulfilling life!
What will you encounter in Episode 1?
Understanding habits in daily life
Charles Duhigg’s book “The Power of Habit” made me realize just how much my habits dominate my life. The book explains that from the first things we do when we wake up to all the choices we make throughout the day, they are all based on our habits. Let’s not be afraid 🙂. Habits are not destiny. You can change everything; it’s completely in your hands.
Charles Duhigg explains that our habits progress through a cue-routine-reward cycle. Of course, we are not mice getting rewarded with cheese when a bell rings… Let’s take a small example from our daily life: brushing our teeth before bed. Here, going to bed serves as a cue, triggering the action of brushing our teeth. The reward is having white, cavity-free teeth.
How do we change habits?
Do you want to organize your life? Think about the situations where the features you think are disorganized become apparent. Then, consider the patterns there. What triggers it? What is the reward there? Writing these down will definitely be helpful. Observing ourselves and becoming aware of something is an ongoing process.
As you build your list, the only thing you need to do to break them is to disrupt one of the cue-routine-reward trio and replace it with what you want to do. At first, you will do it with effort, but soon you will start doing it without realizing it. And voilà, your old habit is gone, and a new one is born 🎉.
Let’s also keep in mind that old habits are not completely gone. They are still waiting for the right trigger somewhere in our brain. Sometimes, I wish I could press control+A+delete on the useless information folder in my brain, but unfortunately, technology hasn’t caught up to that yet… Actually, it could happen faster than we think. Until we figure out how to erase these useless triggers from our brain, let’s learn to live with them 🙂.
